Highway Works Progress Update and 2026 Completion Plans
Major progress achieved on Station Road and West Hendon Broadway improvements. Final works scheduled for completion in May 2026, including Borthwick Road closure and Cool Oak Lane junction upgrade.
Progress Achieved Since July 2025
In July 2025, we completed the widening of Station Road and closed the Perryfield Way gyratory. Since then, significant progress has been made on the West Hendon Major Highway Works Scheme.
Completed Works
We have successfully completed:
- Station Road and West Hendon Broadway improvements: Remaining footway paving and carriageway widening along Station Road and on West Hendon Broadway, both north and south of Station Road
- Ravenstone Road junction: Construction of the new access for the signalised junction, which will open to traffic towards the end of the Major Highway Works programme
- Environmental enhancements: Spaces for greening created along Station Road, with tree pits installed along the Broadway to support the planting of new trees in the coming months
Traffic Flow Improvements
Works carried out on Station Road have enabled two-way traffic and improved traffic flow in the area, redirecting vehicles from local roads, such as Herbert Road and Wilberforce Road, and channelling them through the main signalised junction instead.
Addressing Utility Challenges
Works between Milton Road and Stanley Road have been delayed due to gas and water mains being shallower than anticipated, which has impacted the construction of the new road widenings. The gas main issue has now been addressed, and we are continuing to liaise with Thames Water. It is anticipated that these works will take place in 2026.
Remaining Works for 2026
In the new year, we will be carrying out the remaining works to complete the scheme, including:
- Borthwick Road closure: Borthwick Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from the A5 West Hendon Broadway
- Footway improvements: Footway paving works will be carried out on Milton Road and on the eastern side of West Hendon Broadway, between numbers 210 and 146
- Cool Oak Lane junction upgrade: The Cool Oak Lane signalised junction will be upgraded
- Traffic islands: New central traffic islands will be constructed along West Hendon Broadway
- Road resurfacing: Carriageway resurfacing will be undertaken along the A5 West Hendon Broadway
Completion Timeline
This work is currently programmed to complete in May 2026, though we expect to be clear of the footways north of Milton Road by February 2026.
