Silk Stream Bridge
A new pedestrian footbridge connecting Hendon Waterside to the West Hendon Playing Fields, enhancing accessibility for the whole community.
About the Bridge
The Silk Stream Bridge is a new pedestrian footbridge that will connect the Hendon Waterside development to the West Hendon Playing Fields and will be open to all the community. The bridge will help create a single, coherent and highly-visible loop which will enhance accessibility to the Welsh Harp, as mentioned in the Joint Vision for the Welsh Harp (2023) commissioned by the Welsh Harp Strategy Group.
Planning consent for the new footbridge was granted by Barnet Council in 2018 and is one of Barratt Metropolitan LLP's obligations as part of the planning process for its Hendon Waterside development. It will:
- complete the long-awaited regeneration of the West Hendon Estate.
- improve access to high-quality open space, promoting health and wellbeing.
- provide a safe and accessible route during day and night with environmentally designed lighting.
- be delivered with an efficient, durable design to help keep ongoing maintenance as low as possible, minimising disturbance to the local habitat.
- be sympathetic and cause minimal disturbance to the local environment and the Welsh Harp’s Site of Special Scientific Interest designation.
Whilst the Welsh Harp is no longer a functioning reservoir it is still of strategic importance for leisure and biodiversity. The area has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation (SMINC).
